by Eileen Rendahl – A whole new take on the supernatural and its interactions with the mundane world, this book is a romp. It’s the first-person story of Melina Markowitz, who had a near-death experience as a toddler and is now a messenger between different types of supernatural beings, when she’s not working her two “normal” jobs to pay her bills. She’s spunky and likeable, vulnerable and tough, the kind of girl you’d like to hang out with and a wonderful person to have in your corner. The book’s secondary characters include a mostly friendly vampire, a prickly werewolf, a hot-to-trot witch, a thieving imp, an eternally horny Kokopelli, and a human best friend… and a mouthwatering cop. And the bad guys are really detestable.
Rendahl takes this improbable mix and makes something fun and touching out of it. I’m glad to see that there’s already a book 2 in what promises to be a terrific series. (finished 10/2/11)
