by Nicole Peeler – Oh, how I love Jane True, the protagonist in Nicole Peeler’s urban-fantasy series! Tempest Rising is the first book of six (with the sixth coming out soon), and I plan to read them all… while hoping Peeler writes more. Jane True’s life has been less than ideal in her hometown of Rockabil, Maine. She has some amazing friends, but has been unable to shake the stigma of being the child of a scandalous mom and the survivor of an incident in which her fiancé died. It’s not until she discovers she is a half-selkie/half-human and her eyes open to the supernatural world all around her that she can begin to make sense of her life. And while she’s making new friends and discovering this new world, people are dying. To make things worse, Jane herself appears to be on the killer’s list. I won’t tell you how she survives (which, obviously, she does, as there are 5 other books in the series), but the action gets pretty intense.
My favorite thing about the book is not the plot or the world Peeler has created. It’s Jane herself, with her unique voice and sense of humor. I’m so glad the story is told in the first person, because Jane’s head is an amazingly fun place to inhabit. Highly recommended. (finished 11/29/11)
