Yarn: unknown mixed-colors bulky yarn (about 49 yards) and teal Red Heart Soft Yarn worsted (about 47 yards) … both from stash!
Needle: US size 8 circ
Pattern: improvised k1p1 rib, over 64 stitches. I used all of the multi-colored, then switched to the teal. I knit until the hat measured about 9 inches tall. Then I did decreases for the crown (every 4 stitches, then every 3, then every other, then every other, etc, until only 8 stitches remained), cut the yarn, leaving 4 inches of yarn in a tail, then pulled the tail through the open loops and pulled it tight. I went back and wove in all of the ends (4 of them, of course). Done!
This is sized to fit a 7-year-old boy. Because of the ribbing on big needles, it will stretch to fit a teenaged girl or woman’s head.
