What am I knitting now? The title of this post is a hint. (It is not a commentary on aging cougars, a term that is redundant in certain contexts.)
Want another clue?
How ’bout: Sore was I ere I saw Eros.**
Still not there?
How ’bout: Ma is as selfless as I am.**
Need one last hint?
Try this one: Emil peed deep lime.**
That’s right! They’re all palindromes. And I am, indeed making a palindrome… scarf, that is. Check it out.
That shot’s a little overexposed, I’m afraid, but you can see that the scarf has reached 19 inches in length. I’m making it out of O-Wool classic 2-ply merino, color #651001. I think it’s fingering weight (26-30 inches to 4″ on US size 2-3 stitches, per the label… although I’m using size 4 and I haven’t even attempted to measure my gauge). Very nice!
Here’s a less bright pic of it:
The observant among you will have noted that I’m making a stretched out version of the original scarf. That is, the pattern is written for a six-row cable, with the cross on row 5. I’m doing it over 10 rows, with the cross on row 9. Oh, and my version is 5 cables wide, meaning it’s made over 64 stitches, rather than the 3 cables/40 stitches in the original.
I made the changes to accommodate the recipient (Hi, Susie!) and her desire for a wide, long scarf. After one skein, we’re at 19 inches long, so this will be at least a 4-skeiner. Which means we should all wish Susie luck finding another skein of this particular dye lot, as she purchased only 3 skeins initially. Otherwise, she’ll have to be satisfied with a shorter scarf.
I love this pattern, love the reversibility of it, the way the cables appear on front and back. I will definitely be making myself one of these… next year sometime. For sure not before the BC19 and Julie have delivered Arianna into the world and our household. But after that, well, let’s just say that there’s another Madam, I’m Adam** scarf in my knitting future. At least one.
** BTW, all of the palindromes above were lifted from this site. Have fun there, but don’t blame me if you can’t pull yourself away from it!

Here’s the finished shot of the two Noro scarves I made for my MIL and FIL, along with the MIL’s mitts.
I saw them over the Turkey Day weekend and made them open their Christmas giftbags early, so I could see their reactions to the knitted goodies. They loved them! And the colors were really perfect for each of them. Score!
You are SO fun to read, I never have to go look for patterns! You pick the coolest stuff. I’m currently working on Bella’s mitts (Twilight’s Bella) for my newly teenaged neice, then I’ll do this scarf. Wouldn’t look good on me, but the color is lovely.
Nice o-wool scarf, and what a fun post! I haven’t heard that many palindromes together since Barbara Kingsolver’s Poisonwood Bible. But it does describe the design technique well. Thanks for sharing.
I love the yellow cable scarf. It looks very bright plus cozy and comfy to wear.
You’re lucky to have completed your Noro scarves. I would love to make one but I have not had the time yet to add it to my knitting. 😦 Both Noro scarves look awesome and I’m glad the mil & fil loved them!
Very clever. My fried brain didn’t let it register at first 😉 I’ve got that pattern on my to do list.
