Yarn: Bernat Satin in Flamingo, it’s 100 % acrylic and worsted weight. 230 m/251 yds per skein, this beret used about half.
Needle: My favorite US size 4 circ (Susan Bates?) [Note: I’m a loose knitter, so you may need to go up a size or two.]
Method: Magic Loop, what else!
Total knitting time: 5-ish hours
Pattern: Improvised as follows.
Cast on 89 stitches. Join in round. (88 st). Mark beginning of round using your preferred method.
Working in round, do K1P1 rib for about 1.25 inches (or to preferred length).
Next round only: *K1, K1 front and back of next stitch * all the way around. (132 st)
Knit in stockinette for next 4 inches (or to desired hat height).
On next round only: *K9, K2tog * all the way around. (120 st)
Knit next round.
On next round only: *K8, K2tog * all the way around. (108 st)
Knit next round.
On next round only: *K7, K2tog * all the way around. (96 st)
Knit next round.
On next round only: *K6, K2tog * all the way around. (84 st)
Knit next round.
On next round only: *K5, K2tog * all the way around. (72 st)
Knit next round.
On next round only: *K4, K2tog * all the way around. (60 st)
Knit next round.
On next round only: *K3, K2tog * all the way around. (48 st)
Knit next round.
On next round only: *K2, K2tog * all the way around. (36 st)
Knit next round.
On next round only: *K1, K2tog * all the way around. (24 st)
Knit next round.
On next round only: * K2tog * all the way around. (12 st) This is the last row!
Cut the working yarn after the last stitch above, leaving a 6-inch tail. Draw the tail through the stitches remaining on the needles, then pull it tight. This closes up the hole on top of the beret. Use the tail to tighten up any loose loops on that drawn-up row, then weave it in well. I made a slipknot in the tail after weaving it in a couple of stitches, then drew the loose end through that and tightened it down. Then I wove the tail in some more and snipped off the extra.
Finish by weaving in the end at the beginning of the cast-on row.
