by Tracey Garvis-Graves – This story of a 30-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy who spend 3.5 years stranded on an island in the Maldives after a plane crash is a really good read. The physical details of Anna and TJ’s day-to-day survival are glossed over a bit after the first dreadful days, and the two are remarkably un-accident prone, but those aren’t really the focus of the book. Rather, as rescue becomes less and less likely, the story focuses on the relationship between Anna and TJ as they face the possibility of life (possibly a short and harsh one) with only one another for company.
The story overlaps real-world events to provide further complications (which I shall not go into, to avoid spoilers). In the end, the novel is life-affirming and satisfying. I really liked it and recommend it highly. (finished 6/21/2012)
