by Geoffrey Germann – “Prepare” is the first book in a new series about Darren Kiel, a genius turned superhero to the oppressed and overwhelmed citizens of the Orchard, a region that has turned into a gangland hell. Darren is a man with a lot of guilt, not over his own past, but over the sins of his father. He feels responsible for protecting everyone, even knowing how impossible that is, and has trouble finding a balance between his mission and his desire to have any kind of personal life.
The book’s beginning was not its strongest part. It was a bit clunky, as if Germann hadn’t really hit his stride yet, narratively speaking. (If I’d given it a rating then, I’d have given it only 3 stars.) I’m glad I kept going, though, as the book got better with every chapter. By the end, the story and characters had captured me. I’m so looking forward to the sequel!
Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this from the author, who wanted me to review it. (finished 7/18/2012)
