by Max Brooks – I loved this book! Its format – a mosaic of personal experiences via short interviews with survivors of the war all over the world – was the perfect way to tell this story. It took me a few segments to realize that there really wasn’t going to be a “hero” whose overarching story we would follow (unlike the majority of books/movies/tv shows), because the hero is humankind in all its variety and randomness. Brooks foresaw types of zombies and places of contact that the rest of us wouldn’t have, but that make perfect sense in his novel.
And as much as I love Brad Pitt, I can’t help thinking that the rumored movie starring him and based on this book? That movie will lose something vital by forcing a “hero” twist on the story. Perhaps the director and screenwriter are smart enough to recognize that fact, too, and will surprise us pleasantly. … Well, a girl can hope, right?! (finished 7/24/2012)
