Yarn: Malabrigo Silky Merino (50% silk, 50% merino), just less than 1 skein (150yds/skein)
Needle: US size 8 circ
My notes/mods:
The pattern doesn’t include a gauge indication, which would have been more helpful for me than the given needle-size suggestion. Also, the finished dimensions are not on the pattern, so I wasn’t sure how tall it was intended to be or how loose the circumference was meant to be.
The pattern seems to say to work 5 repeats of the 12-row pattern, but that would have been just too much. Instead, I worked 4 pattern repeats, which put it at 7 inches.
Also, the original stitch count (84 stitches in circumference) made for a very tight cowl on me, so I ripped it all out after about 3 inches of knitting and re-cast on… this time 102 stitches. The stitch pattern within each row is in multiples of 6, so it was pretty easy to adjust it. The result: a loose-enough-yet-snug cowl.
These little things (plus my general inability to remember where I was in the pattern/row count) led to quite a bit of tinking in what should have been a pretty simple pattern. That’s what led me to give the project a difficulty reading of “medium”. Of course, your mileage may vary.
