Yarn: Lion Brand Microspun in Mocha (approx 41 yds) and Bernat Satin Sport in Flamingo (approx 7 yds)
Needle: US size 2 circ
Notion: Semicircular metallic ring, sold in a 3-pack at the Evil Empire (a.k.a., Wal*mart) a few years ago.
Pattern: Improvised. I cast on 56 stitches in the tan/mocha color, using Magic Loop to work in the round. The first 9 rounds (about an inch) are in k2p2 ribbing. The rest is in stockinette.
I started decreases when the hat measured 4 inches from the cast-on edge, decreasing every other round. I worked 8 decreases evenly around (every 7 stitches on the first decrease round). Every decrease row was followed by a row of straight knitting.
When I was down to 24 stitches, I switched to the pink yarn. I knit two straight rounds (no decreases, then went back to decreasing every other round. When I was down to 8 stitches, I placed the metallic half-circle ring around the knit stitches on one needle, so that I could integrate it into the fabric. (The ring doesn’t open, so I couldn’t add it after the knitting was done.
I did one straight knitting round on the eight stitches, then I worked one round as k1, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k1… thereby decreasing to 6 stitches/round.
After that, I knit 3 rounds without decreases, then cut a 5-inch tail and pulled it through the live stitches, drawing them tight. Then I wove in all the yarn ends on the inside.
Total project time: around 2 hours
