by Jennifer Weiner – An excellent read. Weiner has a way of taking the set-up of a typical chick-lit story and giving it a depth and pathos that resonate unexpectedly. In this novel, we get a look into the business of making a sitcom and how it clashes with the artistic process. Our heroine, named Ruth, has her dream come true: a sitcom she wrote has been greenlighted for production. As she moves from dream to reality, she is forced to compromise her vision at every step. And as interesting as this is, it’s Ruth’s voice and personal story that grab you. Ruth is so different from a typical Hollywood writer and producer, so outside the stereotype, that it’s easy to put aside any prejudices we might have about that industry and the people who work in it. We want her to have it all: a hit show and a chance for happiness with the man she’s secretly in love with.
Ruth’s story is funny and sad, with triumph and heartbreak and everything in between. Highly recommended. (finished 4/29/13)
