by Hugh Howey – So good! If you want to find out how the silos from “Wool” came to be and why they were needed, this book is a must-read. Howey has created a frighteningly possible origin story for the world of Wool. It was a terrific decision to make it the second book in the trilogy, as those of us who loved book 1 are already be so invested in the characters and their lives that we find extra depths and echoes of that book while reading Shift. The structure of the novel (told from two different timeframes by two different POV characters, Troy and Donald) perfectly sets up the first major twist, which takes place about a quarter of the way into the book. After that, the story is rather more linear, but jumps settings, again with different POV characters, including Jimmy from Silo 17, whose personal history is plumbed well at last.
I can’t wait to get my hands on the final volume in the trilogy, Dust. (finished 12/27/13)
