by Patricia Briggs – A worthy second volume in the Mercy Thompson series. The already complicated supernatural scene gets even more complex when a demon-possessed vampire goes on a killing spree. The creature has an inexplicable ability to override the mental barriers of even the oldest and strongest of the vamps in the Tri-City area… and it really likes to kill, even as its very presence stirs violence among the humans and werewolves. Only Mercy seems immune to its powers, but the creature has no trouble or qualms about using its superior physical strength to defeat her the old-fashioned way: by tossing her around like a ragdoll and leaving her bloody. For reasons Mercy doesn’t understand, the mistress of the local vampire seethe believes our heroine’s walker abilities give her a unique, but unspecified, advantage over the demonic vamp… if only Mercy can figure out what that is before it’s too late.
A fast, intense read. Highly recommended. (finished 12/31/13)
