by Jana Barkley – Set in the milieu of a group of modern-day falconry enthusiasts in California, this novel of love and passion (both human and avian) features main characters with whom I can relate. They’re adults, with real lives and problems and pasts, and their progress toward a relationship happens at a believable pace. The story is told mostly from the heroine’s POV, and I’d’ve liked to have spent a little more time inside the mind of her love interest. It’s a small quibble, and the story didn’t suffer from the lack.
The author is a master falconer, a fact which is abundantly obvious from the level of detail about the sport in the novel. The first half of the book is perhaps a tad overloaded with details that don’t really affect the story, details that might be distracting to those who might pick up the book primarily for the relationship between the main characters and who might have little or no interest in falconry.
The end of the story is satisfying, providing a rich payoff that’s not too pat or trite. 4 out of 5 stars (finished 4/28/14)
