by Keith R.A. DeCandido – Book 4 in the Supernatural series. Set in 1859, 1969, 1989 and 2009, the action involving of our favorite Winchesters is set in season 5 of the TV series, shortly after the episode titled Changing Channels. The 1859 portion introduces the supernatural antagonists of the novel; the 1969 section involves Sam and Dean’s maternal grandparents and their mom, taking up about a third of the novel; the 1989 section features primarily John Winchester and fills the middle third of the book; and the 2009 section stars Sam and Dean, with some help from Castiel, and completes the tale.
DeCandido not only did his usual amazing job of capturing Sam and Dean’s adult personalities and voices, he also brought Samuel, Deanna and Mary Campbell, plus John Winchester, to life. And the peeks he provided inside 10-year-old Dean’s heart and mind were poignant and dead-on, providing real insight into the man he becomes and fans love.
I enjoyed spending time with all of these characters, more than I’d expected, given that “our boys” aren’t the focus of the first two-thirds of the novel. It’s a credit to the author that I felt no compunction to rush through that portion and was in fact quite happy to let the story unfold at its own pace. Well done, sir! (finished 7/1/14)
