by John Scalzi – I love this book! What starts out as a simple spoofing on the original Star Trek show turns into a surprisingly deep existential quest, bringing into question the whole idea of creation. The story itself is fun, telling the story of space exploration from the POV of some “redshirts” assigned to the starship Intrepid. Yes, redshirts: those poor, often nameless schmoes who have a shockingly high mortality rate when they accompany the ships officers on away missions. The twist: some of these redshirts decide they want to live.
The three codas are set in our present, one each from the POV of three people in the main story. They ground the story and somehow make it more poignant and real. I was left with a serious case of the warm fuzzies and a strong affection for everyone whose worlds I’d just shared.
So very highly recommended for any SF fan with a sense of humor. (finished 1/16/2013)
