So that sole fingerless mitt I mentioned in my last post? Turns out I didn’t like it.
My first clue that I didn’t like it was a sense of “meh” about it while I was knitting it. The second clue was that I didn’t bother to weave in the ends.
Ignoring such clues, I cast on the second of the pair and did about 3 inches of it, all the while thinking, “Meh.”
Finally, I snapped myself out of denial and sent the two mitts to the frog pond. Rip it, rip it!
I decided instead to do a simple 1×1 rib pattern, with a thumb, but I didn’t want to have to track what I was doing and when, as I made up the things as I went along. So I knit them simultaneously. Sort of.
More precisely, I knit each one separately for the first 3 rounds, then fed them both onto the same circular needle and finished them together. Now, my memory is not good enough to remember changes from one mitt to the next mitt, if I knit them consecutively, but it’s sharp enough to hold onto a pattern detail from one mitt to the next when I’m only doing half a row of the first, then the same half row on the second mitt, etc, etc.
There are online video and photo sources that can teach you how to set up the knitting needle to do two things in the round on one long circular needle (magic loop!), although I don’t have a list of them. (Not much help, am I?) Just google for them. Lord knows, my own attempt to explain it would be befuddling, at best.
The result? Not fancy, but done in about 4 hours, I think. See the sidebar for any details you might want on this FO. And here’s the pictorial evidence of the mitts’ doneness (what do you mean “it’s not a word?” you read it, didn’t you? that makes it a word, right?):
Oh, and Sarah? They’re not for you, missy. Yours will be a different color, one more suited to you. So get your butt back to work and you might actually get to see them as I work on them!
*** Thanks for your kind comments on FO# 20. I love it, too, and will have to make myself a version of this soon. Well, not till after the holidays, but soon after that.
These are nice’uns too! Guess what? I’m coming back to work tonight! Not sure if its one of your RDO’s but I can’t wait to see you!
